Job Search Tips

Is your job search off to a slow start? Here are some time-saving job search tips that will help you out:

Be Prepared- Make sure you have an answering machine or voice mail system in place. Put your cell phone number on your resume so you can follow up in a timely manner.

Be More Than Prepared- Always have an up-to-date resume ready to send. You never know when an opportunity that is too good to pass up might come along.

Get Help- Utilize free services that provide career counseling and job search assistance like college career offices or staffing agencies such as Levert Personnel Resources. We are Northern Ontario’s largest personnel resources firm, specializing in providing general workers, skilled workers and trades people. Call us today 1-800-461-5934

Create Your Own Templates- Have copies of your resume and cover letter ready to edit. That way you can change the content to match the requirements of the job you’re applying for.

Use Job Search Engines- Search the job search engines. Use the job search engine sites to search the major job banks, company sites, associations, and other sites with job postings. Try using words like: jobs in Sudbury Ontario, Northern Ontario Jobs, Staffing agencies in Sudbury or Employment in Sudbury Ontario.

Jobs by Email- Let the jobs come to you. Use job search agents or job alerts to sign up and receive job listings by email. Be sure to check our Job Alerts tab on our homepage. www.levert.ca

References Ready- Have a list of three references including name, job title, company, phone number and email address ready to give to interviewers.

Use Your Network- Be aware of the fact that many job openings aren’t advertised. Tell everyone you know that you are looking for work. Ask if they can help.

Don’t Stop- Don’t limit your searching to the top sites like Monster, CareerBuilder and HotJobs. Check the smaller niche sites like Levert Personnel Resources that focus on a particular geographic location or career field and you will find plenty of job listings. Get on Twitter-
Use Twitter to demonstrate your professional expertise and draw the attention of people in your industry who would want to hire you. At the same time, actively reach out to those kinds of people by following and networking with industry recruiters and other insiders.

Google Yourself- Put positive and branded professional content under your name and Google yourself everyday.

Start a Blog-
It’s a fact that companies and organizations are employing social media in the recruiting process. To stand out online, you’re going to need more than a Facebook account. So start a blog. Bloggers are the Internet’s thought leaders. If you can establish yourself as an online authority in your field, you’re a step ahead of other online candidates who are doing the bare minimum.

Give to Get- The karma of the job search says “What goes around, comes around.” If you want to receive something, first you must give something. Freely give your time and talent to others. Give without expectation of getting anything back.

Stay Positive- While there may be times when your job search will leave you feeling frustrated, don’t ever give in to negative feelings or let them derail you from your professional goals! The key is to be with someone who is going to reinforce your efforts and give you encouragement and suggestions. How to Keep Busy Between Jobs

It’s a person’s worst nightmare: the resume gap. Being unemployed and looking for work is stressful enough without having to worry that each day is adding to a glaring gap on your resume. There are many things you can do to stay productive and strengthen your resume while you are between jobs. At Levert Personnel Resources, we are here to help! But here are a few things you may want to consider:

Learn- If you are off for a while, employers will naturally worry that your skills have become outdated. By taking a course or even pursuing an advanced degree, you are then in a great position to show that you have remained interested and engaged in your field. Check out http://www.cambriancollege.ca or http://www.contactnorth.ca/

Volunteer- While you’ve got some extra time, why not give something back to your community? You’ll feel better about how you are spending your time off, and volunteer work will reflect very nicely on you in the eyes of any potential employer.

Freelance- Being unemployed presents you with a great opportunity to do freelance work or contract work. Even landing small jobs will allow you to supplement your knowledge and your income, while compelling you to stay current. And again, potential employers will be delighted to see that your time off was used constructively. Visit our job search page at www.levert.ca for jobs in Sudbury and Northern Ontario.

Internships- If you are just starting out or already have an established career, taking an internship at a job during your time off can be a great way to expand your knowledge base. Seeing what other organizations are doing keeps you on the leading edge and the networking and contact potentials nice also. An internship can also be a great way to try out other careers.

Professional Organizations- Joining a professional organization in your area can be a big help too, especially if you have the time to commit to a leadership role. By interacting and connecting with people in your field at events and meetings you are significantly expanding your contacts and increasing your chances of landing another job. Visit the Sudbury Youth Professionals Association for more information http://www.ypasudbury.ca

Close That Gap- A gap in your resume isn’t the end of the world, but using your time wisely can be a great asset as you continue to search for work. Whatever you decide, the key thing to remember is that potential employers are looking to see that you used your time off productively. That’s why it is important to be able to demonstrate that you have remained involved in career-oriented activities. This is just as import for you as it is for the employer, because staying involved can help you avoid the feelings of discouragement and hopelessness that so often accompany a period of unemployment. And who knows, in the time between steady jobs you may discover something about yourself, professionally or personally, that can lead to positive changes in your career and your life!
